A magnificent vase with mascaron handles in the form of Hermes’ head and his two main attributes: the winged helmet and the caduceus—a winged staff entwined with two snakes! Hermes is not only the god of commerce. First and foremost, he is the god of esoteric scientific knowledge. In the Middle Ages, alchemy was referred to as “hermetica,” and in ancient times, the secret knowledge of Egyptian priests was also known in Europe by that name.
He is also the mediator between gods and humans—hence the wings on his staff and sandals!
The narrative painting and the softness of the scene are closer to the style of the Restoration period (1820s), when, alongside classical form, there emerged a growing interest in more domestic and lyrical subjects.
